Early childhood care and education (ECCE), as defined by UNESCO, is the “holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.” The years from birth to age 8 are viewed as a critical period for developing the foundations for thinking, behaving, and emotional well-being. During these years children develop linguistic, cognitive, social, emotional, and regulatory skills that predict their functioning in many domains later.
