Producing socially responsible young entrepreneurs

About the Challenge: The School Enterprise Challenge is a global business start-up Awards Programme, run by the educational charity, teaches A Man To Fish. It aims to create globally aware, socially responsible young entrepreneurs. The programme helps students to plan and set up school business that.

  • Generate profits to help support its educational activities.
  • Give students the chance to gain hands-on experience of running a real school business.
  • Are sustainable, will grow and develop each year.

Students develop essential skills in business and entrepreneurship in a practical, fun and innovative way. In 2016, more than 5000 schools from over 100 countries registered to take part. The businesses they started ranged from fly fishing in Belize to an inter-school newspaper in India and a car wash in South Africa. Schools generate an average net profit of $462 in just their first 3 months of operation!

Challenge in NPS International School: We started the challenge in 2016 by opening our own canteen only on special occasions for our students and staff members during school events like Sports day, Annual day, PTM etc., The business did well as we got a profit of Rs.1,20,000 at the end of the sixth month. But the challenge had to face stiff competition from many schools across the globe and we couldn't make it to be the prize winners. Therefore in 2017 we planned and executed a proper business with improved plan of action. This time we started the school canteen which will run six days in a week. Along with the canteen, we also trained our students in making perfumed candles and craft items made of water hyacinth.

The candle and craft items will be sold only during special school events like PTM and other functions. The challenge is ongoing in current session in which 4 months have completed and the result of which will be announced in 2018 February.

All our class 12 and 11 Commerce students have taken part in the business activity. This gives them a platform to practically perform what they have learnt in their Entrepreneurship, Accountancy and Business Studies classes.

We have planned to use profit and give a scholarship to deserving students from nearby local govt school students. By taking up this challenge, NPS International School is preparing its students to be equipped for the future.
